Late Easter: Fewer hotel guests in March

After the record year 2024, Germany tourism is a bit difficult at the start of the year. The late Easter has changed the travel plans of a certain group.

The late date of the Easter Festival this year led to low overnight stays in March. The hotels and other accommodation companies with at least ten beds recorded 32.7 million overnight stays in the month, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. That was 7.7 percent less than a year ago when a large part of the Easter holidays were already in March.

The campsites were particularly affected with a decline of almost 42 percent. In holiday apartments and houses, 18.1 percent fewer overnight stays were counted. Both types of accommodation are mainly used for family vacations.

With a decline of 8.4 percent, guests from Germany had booked even significantly less than those from abroad with a minus of 4.0 percent.

Also in the entire first quarter, the number of overnight stays with 84.8 million was 4.4 percent behind the value from the record year 2024. The statisticians also attribute this decline to the later Easter date in the current year. The figures, including April, should therefore only be really comparable.
