Tourism and sustainability rarely go hand in hand. The Danish capital wants to change something – with rewards, among other things for train drivers.
In times of over -tourism and climate crisis, the Danish capital Copenhagen wants to encourage its guests again to travel more sustainably. The “Copenpay” campaign is expanded this summer to a longer period of time, more offers and with a focus on train travelers.
Already in the case of a pilot project lasting several weeks in the summer of 2024, tourists were able to earn certain cultural experiences, drinks and other things by using the bike or metro, for example during their stay in Copenhagen or collecting garbage in parks, beaches or in water. This offer is now doubled to a period of nine weeks and the number of associated actions tripled to 90, as the tourism organization Wonderful Copenhagen announced. The campaign runs this year from June 17th to August 17th.
Among other things, a focus is on train drivers: Anyone who comes by train to Copenhagen should be rewarded with free rental bikes, yoga hours, tours or reduced admission prices for some of the city’s largest attractions. In addition, vacationers should be encouraged to travel less – but to stay longer.
“By integrating more responsibility into the visitor experience, Copenpay redefines how we encounter tourism in Copenhagen,” said the head of Wonderful Copenhagen, Søren Tegen Pedersen. Instead of bringing even more guests into the city, the campaign aims to sharpen the awareness of tourists for a more sustainable trip. Tourism contributes significantly to the CO2 emissions, which is why it is necessary to change the mindset of travelers and to encourage them to make them more environmentally friendly.
