Elon Musk wants to start a Tesla robotaxi service at the end of June. But the responsible US authority has so far seemed remarkably little about the system.
Around a month and a half before the announced start of a Robotaxi service from Tesla, the US transport security authority still has a lot of questions. The NHTSA wants to know from the electric car manufacturer, among other things, how the vehicles should behave in emergency situations and how Tesla came to the conclusion that the robotaxi software is ready for use even without people. The group, led by Tech billionaire Elon Musk, has time for an answer until 19 June.
Musk had announced that Tesla would start a Robotaxi service in Austin Texan at the end of June with 10 to 20 vehicles. He claims that most of the new Tesla vehicles already have everything necessary to be on the move as self -driving cars. That is why Musk always speaks of millions of autonomous Teslas, which would soon be on the streets. However, competitors and experts have doubts because Musk only wants to rely on cameras and dispenses with the more expensive laser radars that feel the surroundings in other robotaxis.
Focus on possible “autopilot” connection
At the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), studies by the previous Tesla driving assistance system “Autopilot” have been running for various accidents for years. The authority therefore also wants to know in particular whether the Robotaxi system has a connection to the “Autopilot” software.
When driving autonomous, the Google sister company Waymo is currently at a clear distance. With over 1500 robotaxis, it makes over 250,000 trips with passengers per week in four US cities.
