Hardly any new jobs are created in economic stagnation. Despite falling number of employees, there are also signs that it could go up again.

The number of employees in Germany continues to shrink. In the first three months of the current year, around 45.8 million people were employed in Germany, as the Federal Statistical Office reported. That was 0.9 percent less than in the fourth quarter of 2024 and 0.1 percent less than a year earlier.

The starting quarter of this year is already the second three -month section in a row, in which the number of employees has dropped in the year. Previously, the number of employees had increased continuously since the second quarter of 2021.

At the same time, more companies were founded whose legal form and number of employees indicate greater economic importance. According to the Federal Office, 36,500 of such businesses were launched in the first three months. That was 11.4 percent more than a year earlier. The number of all trade registrations, including the conversions, increased by 2.1 percent to 206,100. This faced 175,000 trade registrations.
