The products that saw their gaps reduce the most were

  • aubergine (-61.4%)
  • pumpkin (-60.3%)
  • lettuce (-58.8%)
  • tangerine (-58.6%).

But overall, 67% of measured foods narrowed their gap in January. In 20 of the 24 products surveyed, local SME stores had better prices than hypermarkets. The greatest difference was found in the price of lettuce, where the average value in SME stores was 18.7% lower than in hypermarkets, and in lemon, where it was 17.3% lower.. Although consumer prices for both products rose in the month, in hypermarkets the increase was much higher.

The data comes from the Index of Prices at Origin and Destination (IPOD) prepared by the Regional Economies sector of CAME based on the prices of origin of the main production areas and more than 700 prices of each product at destination, surveyed not only in greengrocers and markets by a team of 30 pollsters, but also by monitoring online prices of the main hypermarkets in the country, during the second half of the month.

General results

  • IPOD fruit and vegetable: down 14% in the month, but up 4.9% in 12 months. The gap was 6.15 times if the weighted average is taken according to the participation of each product in the sales of the Central Market of Buenos Aires for that month and 5.63% if the simple average is measured.
  • IPOD rancher: rose 1.1% in the month and fell 5.8% in the year. The gap was 2.96 times (weighted average).
  • Producer share of final price: rose from 26.3% in December to 31.8% in January, if the simple average is taken, and it was 37.4% weighted by product.

In January, the largest gap between price of origin and destination occurred in the carrot, with a difference of 23.1 times. He was followed by zucchini (13.5 times), the Orange (9.4 times), the lemon (7 times) and the pumpkin, also with a gap of 7 times. The products with the smallest gaps, meanwhile: lettuce (1.3 times), broccoli (1.5 times), eggplant (1.6), eggs (1.8) and chicken (two).
