Fishing is a political issue, especially in Great Britain. On Monday, Brussels and London agreed on a deal that also includes the dispute. A German expert is surprised.
Fishing expert Gerd Kraus praised the agreement between the EU and Great Britain through access to fishing areas. “Free access to the waters of the United Kingdom offers security for the future of European fishermen,” said Kraus, who heads the Thünen Institute for Sea Fisherman in Bremerhaven. “This result was not necessarily to be expected before the negotiations.”
The EU and Great Britain had agreed to extend mutual access to waters in fishing until June 30, 2038. The provisions originally expired in 2026 are thus extended by twelve years. In the UK, the topic is a political issue. Control over his own fish-rich waters was one of the most important arguments of the Brexit supporters.
Kraus told the German Press Agency that Great Britain could have further limited access and fishing in the exclusive economic zone after the agreement had expired. That was turned away. The exclusive economic zone begins about 22 kilometers behind the mainland; States have exclusive usage rights there.
Expert: catch rates decisive
According to Kraus, it is decisive how the fishing rates will be regulated in the future. These determine how many fish can be caught by whom. Questions are, for example: “Does the EU fishermen fan rate continue to decrease or is the current state frozen, for example?” Fischer in the EU hoped that the quota would not worsen, said Kraus.
In the previous trade and cooperation agreement between the EU and Great Britain, the conditions are included in which both sides can define their individual rights to fishing in their respective waters. As part of this agreement, 25 percent of the EU catching options in Great Britain waters between 2021 and 2026 are gradually transferred to the fleets of the United Kingdom.
