The economic situation in Germany is pretty dark. It looks better with the shipyards and suppliers. The new civil ship building even reports an all -time high. Only China is worried.
Despite the economic overall situation, Germany’s shipbuilders are extremely optimistic about the future. “Behind us is largely successful in part,” said the President of the Association for Shipbuilding and Marine Technology, Harald Fassmer, in Hamburg. The utilization of the member companies is high, the order books are well filled. The industry employs around 200,000 people nationwide and implement a total of around 40 billion euros a year.
Orders worth more than ten billion euros
The civilian new ship building even reached an all -time high with an order intake worth more than ten billion euros, said Fassmer. “The repair business is going well, naval shipbuilding is going well,” he emphasized. He sees good growth opportunities for the future. “This means that the shipbuilding and marine technology industry stands out positively from the general economic situation.”
Fassmer warned, however, that the industry could only be successful “if we return to a solid growth path”. In view of the global threat, a powerful marine shipbuilding industry is also necessary.
China’s dominance is worried about the association
However, China’s dominance is taking care of the new shipping building, said VSM general manager Reinhard Lüken. If the country still had a weighted gross area in 2002 during the new shipping building – it takes into account the converted volume, the workload or the added value depending on the ship’s type – of around 1.5 million, it is now the 20 million. Europe, on the other hand, has now fallen from five million to less than two million.
China since 2021 has also been in front of the South Korea shipbuing and now takes over around two thirds of all civilian new building orders. In addition, there is a massive expansion of the Chinese Navy. This is followed by China’s President Xi Jinping to develop the ability to take Taiwan by 2027 – be it with military means. “These developments are to be taken very seriously,” warned Lüken.
