The living room also serves as a bedroom, three children share a room: a good eleven percent of the population lives in cramped apartments in this country. Several groups are particularly affected.

Around every ninth in Germany lives in cramped living conditions. This is shown by figures from the European Statistics Office, from which the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) quotes. According to this, 11.5 percent of people in Germany lived in an overcrowded apartment last year. Accordingly, younger people up to 30 years are particularly affected.

“Even normal and well-being earners can hardly afford an apartment in many cities,” said BSW boss Sahra Wagenknecht to the “Editorial Network Germany” (RND). Rents would have to be capped nationwide, the former member of the Bundestag demanded. The Merz principle “Building, building, building!” Do not solve the problems because there is hardly any affordable living space. “The housing construction should be specifically boosted by public and non -profit housing companies and promoted by interest -loving loans.”

Germany performs significantly better than the EU cut

However, data from the Federal Statistical Office, which also refers to Eurostat, also show that Germany is significantly below the EU average of 16.9 percent when overcrowding in living space. Accordingly, Romania is at the top with a quota of 40.7 percent, it is the lowest in Cyprus (2.4 percent). The countries of France and Spain do a little better than Germany: 10.4 and 9.1 percent of the population lived there in overcrowded apartments last year.

According to the statistician, an apartment is considered overcrowded if a household has too few rooms in relation to the number of people: for example, if the living room also serves as a bedroom, three or more children have to share a children’s room or a brother and sister, both in teenage age.

Single parents, arms and foreigners often live cramped

According to the Federal Statistical Office, particularly single parents and their children, people at risk of poverty and adults with a foreign passport were affected by cramped living conditions in 2024. In addition, people in cities suffered around three times as often from a lack of living space as residents of rural areas.
