Warning strike is lame doner skewer production

The Birtat kebab factory is one of the largest in Germany. According to the NGG union, the salary is “completely arbitrary”. Now the employees turn the tables – and are calling for a collective agreement.

Because of a warning strike, production in the Donerspieß factory of Birtat near Ludwigsburg is largely silent. The union has called on the food and enjoyment union (NGG). For the almost 115 employees, she is currently negotiating with the company about a tariff regulation of salaries. With the warning strike you want to give the conversations a thrust, NGG negotiator Magdalena Krüger said.

“The mood is good, even though it rains,” said Krüger in front of the factory in the morning. “But know the employees to be left in the rain.” Six people went into it, 100 would be outside.

BIRTAT belongs to the Meat World SE and, according to the NGG, is the largest manufacturer of kebab skewers in Baden -Württemberg – and one of the leading providers in Germany. In the factory in Murr, the employees are meat like calf, chicken or beef on skewers – and give the whole the traditional form. The skewers are then shocked and delivered.

According to its own statements, BIRTAT provides several thousand kebab restaurants in Europe with its products. More than 13 million consumers are reached per month, according to the company website. The company was unavailable for a statement before the warning strike.

Operation should stand still for four hours

Doner fans do not have to worry for the time being: According to Krüger, the company should only be completely shut down for four hours. On Thursday, nobody has to do without the snack – consisting of flatbread with meat, vegetables and sauce.

After two unsuccessful negotiations, the anger of the employees and the willingness to fight are great. “So far, the remuneration seems to be completely arbitrary,” said Krüger. So far, personal relationships and individual negotiation skills of the employees have decided on the amount of the salary. “This is neither just nor transparent and cannot stay so”. A works council had only been founded in the factory last year.

Pioneer project for the industry

The union demands an entry content of 3,000 euros from the company and a fair and transparent remuneration structure. A collective agreement in this industry would therefore be unique nationwide. It is an “absolute pilot project”. In addition, how many employees work in the area that belongs to meat processing had no precise figures. Negotiations with the company are to be continued on May 27th.
