Klingbeil sees positive signals in the customs dispute

The aggressive approach of the United States with higher duty barriers is burdening world trade. Does the G7 finance minister dialogue contribute to relaxation?

Federal Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil sees positive signals in the conflict of customs policy in the United States after talks in the circle of the seven major industrialized countries (G7). He perceived his American colleagues as very constructive and solution-oriented, said the SPD politician on the sidelines of a meeting of the G7 finance minister in the Canadian holiday resort Banff. “It’s a good sign.” In the past few weeks it was not always clear whether the Americans wanted to come to a solution.

Klingbeil had also met his US colleague Scott Bessent in Banff for a conversation in four eyes. He spoke of a good start that further meetings had been agreed. “Above all, we agreed that we wanted to find solutions.” There are now a few weeks in which this must succeed in negotiations by the EU Commission and the US side.

US President Donald Trump has imposed or announced high tariffs on goods from all over the world and triggered additional uncertainty with turns. The G7 group includes Germany, France, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, Canada and the USA.

Support for Ukraine

Klingbeil said that the conference also became clear that Ukraine could rely on great solidarity and support from the G7 countries. “This is also an important sign of solidarity and coexistence.” There was encouragement for the projects of the new federal government in order to get back on growth in Germany.
