Russians began to resort to consumer loans more when buying real estate

In 2022, a consumer loan has gained significant popularity as a down payment on a mortgage. This is stated in a study by Raiffeisenbank, which Izvestia has.

The survey notes that in 2022, 89% of Russians plan to buy a home with a mortgage. A year earlier, 62% were going to buy an apartment in this way, and every fifth wanted to pay the entire cost at once. However, this year there was no one among the respondents who could afford such a large purchase without borrowing.

As the authors of the study found out, the most pressing issue is the down payment, in connection with which consumer loans have gained particular popularity.

So, this year, 12% of respondents consider obtaining a non-targeted loan for an entry fee, while a year earlier – 7%. As the reasons for choosing a consumer loan instead of a mortgage, its profitability, understandability and safety are still indicated.

Experts explain this behavior of Russians as an attempt to take advantage of not yet very high rates and preferential programs. But there are more risks than benefits, experts warn.

The survey involved 1.3 thousand people from 17 major Russian cities planning to buy an apartment during the year. The age of the majority of the share is 26-45 years, while 69% have children.
