The Birtat kebab factory is one of the largest in Germany. According to the NGG union, the salary is “completely arbitrary”. Now the employees turn the tables – and are calling for a collective agreement.

A warning strike temporarily shut down the production in the Birtat company at Ludwigsburg. The union has called on the food and enjoyment union (NGG). For the almost 115 employees, she is currently negotiating with the company about a tariff regulation of salaries. With the warning strike you want to give the conversations a thrust, NGG negotiator Magdalena Krüger said.

Leading kebab skewer provider

BIRTAT belongs to the Meat World SE and, according to the NGG, is the largest manufacturer of kebab skewers in Baden -Württemberg – and one of the leading providers in Germany. In the factory in Murr, the employees are meat like calf, chicken or beef on skewers – and give the whole the traditional form. The skewers are then shocked and delivered.

Birtat supplies several thousand kebab restaurants and, according to their own statements, reaches more than 13 million consumers per month. “You can taste our products almost in every big city in Europe,” said a company spokesman. One is a market leader. The entire company recently made annual sales of around 200 million euros.

Operation stood still for four hours

Doner fans didn’t have to worry: According to Krüger, the company was only completely quiet for four hours. So nobody had to do without the snack – consisting of flatbread with meat, vegetables and sauce. The strip was “extremely successful”. The 100 employees would have participated, only one handful had gone to work. You could have a strong sign.

After two unsuccessful negotiations, the anger of the employees and the willingness to fight are also great. So far, nothing of the high kebab prices has been received by the employees. “So far, the remuneration seems to be completely arbitrary,” said Krüger. So far, personal relationships and individual negotiation skills of the employees have decided on the amount of the salary. “This is neither just nor transparent and cannot stay so”. A works council had only been founded in the factory last year.

Pioneer project for the industry

The union demands an entry content of 3,000 euros from the company and a fair and transparent remuneration structure. A collective agreement in this industry would therefore be unique nationwide. It is an “absolute pilot project”. In addition, how many employees work in the area that belongs to meat processing had no precise figures.

The union set the bar very high, said the Birtat spokesman. You have to get advice now on what options you have. The collective bargaining should continue on May 27th.
