A good cell phone network is extremely important in the digital age. But how good are the networks? This can determine this in a nationwide mobile phone measurement week.
In order for the cell phone networks to become better and the last sparkling holes disappear, the Germans should pull out their cell phones and carry out measurements in the coming week. The federal, state and municipalities are calling for the first nationwide mobile phone measurement week. It starts on Monday and runs until the following Sunday.
Citizens should use the free broadband measurement app of the Federal Network Agency. With the results, a more precise image of the actual quality of the cell phone networks is to be created and can be recognized where there is still a need for action. Last year there was such a mobile phone measurement week in North Rhine-Westphalia.
“Together we collect a current picture of network availability – and thus the database for better mobile phone supply everywhere,” said Federal Digital Minister Karsten Wildberger (CDU). Network agency boss Klaus Müller says that the results can better assess the situation on site.
Measurement vehicles and information should be found
Germany’s cell phone networks have gotten significantly better in recent years – but in some places the connections are still weak.
According to the Federal Network Agency, anyone who is a telecom customer ended up in a radio hole in 1.2 percent of Germany in January-the old language telephony standard 2G was not even available there. There was no 4G radio standard for eight percent of the area and no 5G to 15.6 percent. According to the figures, the area coverage of the network operator competitors Vodafone and O2 Telefónica is sometimes significantly worse.
Vodafone Germany’s technology chief, Tanja Richter, emphasizes that her company analyzes the quality of your network and that measuring vehicles are used every day. “These also check the cover and quality of our network on site.” With a view to the mobile phone measurement week, in which consumers should measure, Richter says: “We are happy to use specific information from customers and municipalities to continuously improve our network on site.”
Measurements via the Broadband measurement app have been possible for a long time and will continue to be in the future. The tests carried out in the measurement week should be evaluated separately.
