Refuel
Why the ADAC Super E10 is promoting

Most of the gasoline engine drivers could also recharge your batteries – but do not do that. ADAC and petrol station operators are for changes in the rules.
When Germans fill up with petrol, they usually use Super E5. But that should change when it comes to ADAC President Christian Reinicke: “Politics should drive the use of Super E10,” he demands. Cars from the year of construction in 2011 tolerated the variety – which may contain up to ten percent biosprit – without any problems. “Nevertheless, in case of doubt, many people will unnecessarily refuel the more expensive and more climate -damaging Super E5.”
The petrol stations are currently obliged to offer E5, which contains a maximum of five percent biosprit. “This no longer makes sense,” criticizes Reinicke. “In a first step, this obligation should therefore pass to Super E10. And if that is not enough, you will have to think about more tougher steps in doubt.” Reinicke does not say whether this would also include a ban – but it does not explicitly exclude it either. “It is also about more climate -friendly alternatives that can be accommodated at the petrol stations and have to be accepted by consumers.”
E10 often six cents cheaper
Last year, according to figures from the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control, E5 made up 67.5 percent of the domestic deliveries of gasoline, which pretty much represent fuel sales in Germany. E10 was 27.4 percent, super plus at a good 5.1. The E10 proportion only grows minimal: in 2023 it was 26.4 percent.
In the years before, it looked like E10 could slowly prevail. Among other things, the extremely high fuel prices in 2022 had the proportion of the often six cents cheaper. In 2020 he was still 13.9 percent.
Reinicke sees countries like Austria as a model. There, too, there is no obligation to offer E5 – “and there are no problems”.
Reinicke agreed with the petrol station operators in his plea against the obligation. “Since the fuel variety of petrol E5 is no longer relevant in terms of engine technology, it would be time for the market economy for fuel sale,” says the Federal Association of Freeler Petrolstations (BFT), for example. “The petrol stations and customers have to decide which product they want. The CO2 savings would also have to have a real interest in E10,” says Managing Director Daniel Kaddik and assures: “The petrol stations where E5 is still in demand will certainly continue. Nobody has to be worried.”
The BFT is also concerned with creating space for fuels such as HVO – a renewable diesel. “The Protection variety E5 binds tank capacity and makes massive investments necessary if HVO is to be introduced.”
The Fuels and Energie Economic Association, which among other things represents the great players of mineral oil economy with the large branded filling stations chains, is also available for the elimination of the obligation to offer E5. This “gave petrol station operators greater flexibility to react to changing customer needs and to offer innovative and climate -friendly fuels in the future,” it said there. The vast majority of vehicles could easily recharge your batteries.
