E-car buyers trust German brands-also abroad

A survey in China, France, the USA and Germany shows the local manufacturers at the forefront of consumers when it comes to quality. This also surprises experts.
In the eyes of the customers, the German manufacturers have the front in terms of quality of their electric cars – also abroad. The lead, which shows itself in a current survey on behalf of the management consultancy Bearingpoint in the USA, China, France and Germany, is clear. If you group the manufacturers to the country of origin, the German brands are in each of the four markets in the front of the quality.
“We were surprised that the German manufacturers were so clearly ahead in total,” says Manuel Schuler, global director of Automotive at BearingPoint. Depending on the market, there were between three and seven percentage points ahead of the second -placed group. The question was asked: “To what extent do you trust the quality of the following brands in the area of battery electric cars?” Everything from I trust fully and all of them, I was more likely to be considered trust.
If you look at individual brands, the picture is a bit more differentiated: in China, for example, BYD is in first place. But just behind – and far ahead of other Chinese brands or Tesla – come there Mercedes -Benz, BMW, VW and Porsche. In the United States, Honda is on the quality throne – and again Mercedes and BMW are relatively just behind and in France and Germany Mercedes and BMW or Mercedes and Audi are at the forefront in the eyes of the customers.
In Germany and France, BYD is also bad
However, it also shows how strongly it can depend on the respective country. In France, for example, the Chinese car manufacturer BYD is located in the last place of the twelve marked brands, in Germany in 10th place out of twelve, each with ratings that are not even half of them from China.
“The Chinese manufacturers are technically strong, but they lack trust in quality outside of their home market,” says Schuler. This could also explain why, for example, they are still quite swording in Germany. “This will certainly also help that customers are not sure whether the manufacturer will still exist in a few years and whether they still have a contact person for service and repairs.” And topics such as data protection could also have contributed, says Schuler. “Strictly speaking, they are not part of the aspect of quality, but customers do not look at it so much.”
So far, the market share of the Chinese manufacturers in Germany is still very manageable. In the first four months of the year, nobody only came to one percent market share.

The evaluation is based on online surveys with a good 2000 respondents in the four countries that took place in December and January.
