When it comes to gas supplies, Germany is dependent on supplies from abroad. This in turn harbors many uncertainties. Federal Minister of Economics Habeck wants to focus more on alternatives.
Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) emphasized during a visit to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that a different economic policy is urgently needed when it comes to gas.
“The fact that Germany, the federal government, the public sector basically has no way of guaranteeing security of supply in the gas sector is an unacceptable situation,” said Habeck after a conversation with his country colleague Reinhard Meyer (SPD) in Schwerin. With a view to political responsibility for the gas market, the developments of the past few months should lead to different framework conditions. Habeck also referred to an increased susceptibility to crises.
According to the Federal Minister of Economics, Germany must reduce its dependence on gas. One of the alternatives he mentioned was the production of hydrogen. For the transitional period of the energy transition, the security of supply could also be secured by the possible construction of our own terminals for the liquid gas LNG. According to Habeck, no investments have been made in LNG technology so far because there is no market for it.
In the event of a Russian invasion of Ukraine, approval of the controversial Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline would have to be viewed in the light of the geopolitical upheavals. In the event of war there will be sanctions that exclude nothing. With regard to the diplomatic efforts, Habeck emphasized: “I also want to believe that it will work. It can’t be any other way.”
