A few weeks after the agreement on a preliminary customs reduction, the tone between the USA and China is exacerbated again. Beijing is particularly bothered by new AI restrictions.
In the trade conflict between China and the United States, the two sides have again overwhelmed with allegations. After US President Donald Trump had accused the Chinese not to adhere to the agreements concluded in Geneva almost three weeks ago, Beijing has now added to the USA with sharp criticism.
After the Geneva talks, the US side “continued to issue new discriminatory restrictions to China,” said the Beijing Ministry of Commerce. Specifically, it called measures that further restricted the sale of AI chips and chip design software to China, as well as the announcement of a cancellation of Visa Chinese students in the USA.
Instead of self-critical to deal with one’s own behavior, the US side accused China of having violated the consensus, the ministry continued.
Trump raises accusations against China
In mid -May, China and the United States decided to reduce their mutual tariffs in Switzerland. A joint explanation of the two largest economies showed that this should temporarily apply for 90 days. The regulation provides for a reduction in US tariffs to Chinese imports from 145 to 30 percent, while Beijing’s surcharges against imports from the United States decreased from 125 to 10 percent.
The US President described China’s opening at the time as the most important goal and stated that China had agreed. Most recently, the US government had tightened the tone towards China. “The bad news is that China, which some may not surprise, broke his agreement with us completely,” Trump explained on Friday on his online platform Truth Social. “So much to be Mr. Nice Guy!” He pushed after. In the post office, he did not explain what he is establishing the violation of the agreement.
Do the presidents speak directly?
According to media reports, other US government agents criticized that China had reduced the tariffs as agreed, but remained still on other trade barriers, such as export restrictions on rare earths.
Also at a press conference in the Oval Office, Trump only said a few hours later that China violated “a large part of the agreement”. However, he was sure that he would speak to Chinese President Xi Jinping – “and hopefully we will find a solution”. From Beijing there was initially no confirmation for such a conversation.
