Coffee price increases significantly more than inflation

The Germans cost their favorite drink a lot. Despite steadily increasing prices, more and more coffee is being introduced.

For coffee, people in Germany have to dig deeper into their pockets. In April, consumer prices for bean coffee increased by a good twelve percent compared to the same month, as the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced. The price increase was significantly larger than with foods in total (2.8 percent) and general inflation (2.1 percent).

In the medium -term comparison, the consumer prices of bean coffee in April were almost a third (31.2 percent) higher than in April 2021 – the inflation was similar to that of food over this period (plus 31.4 percent), but higher than general inflation (18.8 percent).

Harvest failures do the price

The reason for the price increase is likely to be the significantly increased import prices for raw coffee that have strongly attracted due to extreme weather due to crop failures. Accordingly, the import prices for non -roasted coffee beans in April were a good 53 percent higher than a year earlier. The import prices for coffee, decaffeinated or roasted, climbed by 35.8 percent for the same month last year.

Despite increasing prices, the import of coffee (raw and roasted) has increased significantly to Germany – in 2024 by a good 14 percent for the previous year. In the long term, the import amount grew by almost 8 percent in 2015. The most coffee came from Brazil, followed by Vietnam and Honduras.
