Representatives of retailers told Izvestia about the growth in demand for smartphones in January 2022.
On Ozon, sales of smartphones in January increased by 50% compared to the same period in 2021, Alexey Zaitsev, head of the Telecom direction of the marketplace, said.
The sale of gadgets from Russian sellers on Aliexpress Russia in pieces increased by 60%, said Arkady Markaryan, head of the Smartphones section of the marketplace.
According to MTS analysts, in Russia as a whole in January 2022, the number of smartphones sold increased by 7.2% compared to the same period last year.
At the same time, last year the Russian smartphone market shrank to 29.5 million units from 32 million units in 2020, Ozon says.
TelecomDaily CEO Denis Kuskov explains the growth in demand for smartphones by the unstable geopolitical situation that has developed in recent months. In particular, we are talking about US sanctions, the possible introduction of which became known in December last year, he said. Then the Reuters agency, citing a source in the administration of US President Joe Biden, reported that in the event of Russia’s aggressive actions against Ukraine, the US could ban the import of smartphones to the Russian Federation, as well as supplies in many other sectors.
“Customers fear a crisis that could make smartphones less affordable and more expensive. The possibility of sanctions is one of the reasons for such concerns,” said Eldar Murtazin, a leading analyst at Mobile Research Group.
