Competition from China: Auto suppliers fear for existence

The auto industry is in crisis. It could be tight for some suppliers in the coming years. According to a survey, the industry expects companies to disappear from the market.

The suppliers also put pressure on the crisis in the auto industry. According to a survey, two thirds of the companies expect market cleanup over the next two years – with providers disappear from the market. This is the result of a survey by the advisory and examination company Baker Tilly among managers of German car suppliers.

67 percent of the respondents stated that they reckon with fewer competitors in two years than today. Only 20 percent expect that new providers – especially from China – push onto the market. Competition from Asia is already a big challenge. A good half of the respondents (51 percent) already attest to the companies there “an unobstructible lead in key technologies”.

Own location better than those of the industry

The assessment of the industry situation is also significantly negative: 79 percent consider it “rather bad” or even “very bad”. The respondents said much more positively with a view to their own company: 78 percent spoke of a “rather” or even “very good” situation. “The perception is drastically abandoned,” says Baker-Tilly expert Jannik Bayat. “Industry seems to recognize the risks, but not to meet this in its own company.”

As a major challenge, 56 percent of the respondents cited the high investment and cost pressure. 60 percent also complained that due to the geopolitical changes and possible trade conflicts, no reliable plans are currently no longer possible. At the same time, 55 percent found that the time window for transformation in the industry closes even faster than previously assumed.

Future even without a combustion engineer

However, the majority do not see a danger to their own company. 75 percent consider your own business model to be largely independent of the change of drive technology. The reason: the parts they manufactured are used in electric cars as well as in combustion models.

Location relocations abroad, on the other hand, do not play a major role. Only 17 percent of respondents consider this step to ensure their competitiveness. In March and April, 100 managers of German car suppliers were interviewed.
