The trend among the bankruptcies in Germany last pointed up, a high was reached in April. Now the IWH economic researcher is presenting new data.
The Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Halle (IWH) sees a declining number of corporate insolvencies after the highest value has been reached in April for 20 years. In May there were 1,478 bankruptcies of passenger and corporations in Germany, the IWH said. That is 9 percent less than in the previous month, but 17 percent more than in May 2024. According to IWH, high bankruptcy figures were recorded, especially in the construction, trade and the processing of businesses, this May.
The head of IEWH insolvency research, Steffen Müller, said: “The early indicators can also expect slightly falling bankruptcy figures for June.” He added: “Nevertheless, we will experience more company bankruptcies in Germany for the foreseeable future than last year.” For April, the IWH had reported 1,626 bankruptcies.
Despite the decline in the company’s bankruptcies in May, the IWH sees more employees affected. “According to the IWH insolvency trend, 15,000 jobs were affected in the largest 10 percent of insolvent companies in May. The number of employees concerned is 7 percent above the previous month, 27 percent above the level of May 2024 and even 130 percent above the May 2016 to 2019.”
