According to a well -known British advisory institute, Munich is the most economically potent city in Germany. But that should therefore change in the near future.
Munich could soon lose its position as the most economically potent German metropolis, according to the British advisory institute Oxford Economics. In the new edition of the “Global Cities Index”, the Bavarian capital and its surrounding area as the best -placed German region are among the first hundred in 22nd in front of Berlin (29), Hamburg (39), Frankfurt (62) and Düsseldorf (99). However, the British analysts assume that the greater Berlin should pass Munich in the not too distant future.
Chief economist Dmitry Gruzinov cited the “robust economic perspective” of the federal capital, the attractiveness of Berlin for young people and the flowering creative and technology sector.
Munich lead only narrow
Every year, Oxford Economics evaluates a thousand large cities or metropolitan areas in five categories worldwide: economic strength, human capital, quality of life, environment and administration. In terms of economic strength, the Greater Munich area with a gross domestic product of $ 283 billion is therefore only $ 280 billion just ahead of Berlin. The “human capital” includes the age structure of the population and the quality of the educational and science institutions.
Small Switzerland does just as well as Germany
Among the 100 top metropolises as well as Germany is the much smaller Switzerland with five cities: Zurich (16th place), Geneva (25), Basel (42), Bern (48) and Lausanne (59). In Austria, only Vienna made it to 36th place among the top placed cities.
New York at the top, English -speaking area above average
According to Oxford Economics New York, Global leading metropolis is ahead of London and Paris. The “Global Cities Index” is characterized by an overweight of the cities in English-speaking countries: Gruzinov and his team alone have recorded 34 US cities under the hit list of the 100 global top metropolises, next to it seven cities from the United Kingdom and Australia, five from Canada, two from New Zealand and one from Ireland. On the other hand, only a Chinese metropolis made it to the top 100: Hong Kong to 72.
