Beer ranking: heavy stand for German breweries

The absolutely largest beer manufacturers are not located in Germany. In international comparison, German brewing groups come under further. Tendency tend to go down than up.

According to an industry analysis, some German representatives have lost ground in the race of the world’s largest beer manufacturers. According to data from the world’s largest hop dealer Barthhaas 2024, the 40 largest breweries made almost 164 billion liters of beer.

That means a slight decline of 0.6 percent compared to 2023, it said. Six German manufacturers are still represented in the ranking, but according to the analysis, only the Bitburg brewing group achieved a plus (1.5 percent).

The TCB Beteiligungsgesellschaft, which includes the Breweries Feldschlößchen in Dresden and Guild in Hanover, kept their beer emissions constant. According to the analysis, the Paulaner group cuts off the average of the top 40 (minus 0.6 percent). Both the market leader in Germany, the Radeberger Group and Krombacher has a decline of 1.4 percent. A strong minus of 12 percent is shown for the Oettinger Group.

Above all, nationalization of foreign brewing activities in Russia ensured that the ranks went down for all German beer manufacturers. With Baltika, the largest brewery of the Russian Federation returns to the ranking in 12th place, which now acts independently of the former parent company Carlsberg. The Russian group OPH combined breweries, once part of Heineken, is new among the top 40.

Overall, the German breweries have only played a rather small role in the ranking. With 1.04 billion liters, the Radeberger Group, which, in addition to the brand of the same name, includes, among other things, that DAB, Berliner Pilsner and Sternburg (previous year 22). This is followed by TCB in 28th place (26), Oettinger to 30 (25), Paulaner at 31 (29), Krombacher to 32 (31) and Bitburger to 33 (32). The worldwide number one, from Inbev, which includes Beck’s in Germany, brewed almost 50 billion liters.

The ranking of the 40 largest breweries is published annually. It partially contains estimates, and some of the previous year were subsequently corrected. Eight German beer manufacturers were represented in the ranking for 2020, at that time Warsteiner and briefly veltins were there. The German beer market has been shrinking for a long time.
