62% of Argentines disagree, but only 22% would stop buying US products

Within the framework of the return of the tariff policies promoted by the administration of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, a new Sherlock Communications survey reveals that 62% of Argentines disagree that the United States imposes new taxes.

Faced with this situation, 49% believe that the most appropriate is to negotiate to reduce tensions, while 48% of respondents consider that The Argentine government should react looking for new business partners outside the United States. Meanwhile, 28% argue that Argentina should impose their own tariffs on American products.

Consulted on how these measures would affect their consumption habits, Only 22% said it would stop buying US products or serviceswhile 44% said that “it depends on the situation” and 25% said they would continue to consume them as always.

US immigration and perception

In relation to other actions of the Trump government, particularly its immigration policy, 63% of Argentines consider it unacceptable to deport handcuffed people, regardless of their immigration status (36% totally agree and 27% agree).

In addition, 56% believe that the United States is trying to generate an anti-Latin feeling (24% totally agree and 32% agree), while 20% disagree and 12% totally disagree.

Latin America numbers

If the five countries surveyed (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Peru) are taken into account, the rejection of Trump’s tariffs in Latin America is even greater: 76% of respondents disagree and claim to fear that these measures harm the economy of their country.

Meanwhile, more than half consider that new business partners should be sought outside the United States, while almost 47% believe that it would be best to try to reduce tensions. Finally, 28.5% would stop buying US products or services, compared to 44% who say “depends on the situation” and almost 23% that would continue to consume them normally.

The situation with tariffs

In the midst of the commercial war promoted by the administration of Donald Trump, the Federal Court of the United States decided on May 28 to suspend tariffs imposed on products from more than 180 countries. The measure was justified by the Court as an excess of authority by the then US president. However, the next day (29), the decision was temporarily revoked after the government appealed. Currently, the court is reviewing the arguments presented by the Presidency.

The study was conducted by BroadmiDed, the Sherlock Communications Research Unit on May 8, 2025. The survey was anonymous, online and covered 2,222 adult people in five countries in Latin America. In the case of Argentina, they participated 411 people.
