The road remains the most important transport route for freight traffic. This is shown by a new report by the Monopoly Commission. The relocation on the rail stagnates.
Germany does not move on the rails when relocating more freight traffic. In 2023, the proportion of freight railways on the entire transport of goods even decreased slightly to almost 20 percent, as can be seen from the current sparkling wine authority of the monopoly commission to the railway (previous year: 20.3 percent). “A shift to the rail can only be observed to a small extent,” it says.
According to the report, the goods transport also decreased not only on the rails, but also the transport of goods last year. The monopoly commission, in particular, mentions the reasons for economic demands as well as cost increases. The old federal government had set itself the goal that around a quarter of the entire goods transport should be handled on the rail by 2030. The new CDU-led government no longer has such a goal.
“The proportion of the rail in the entire traffic performance remains behind the political expectations,” the authors write in the sparkling wine report. “The positive competitive developments in recent years are stagnating.”
The monopoly commission calls on the government to formulate clear political goals with a view to the rail. In addition, it should control more how the Deutsche Bahn (DB) uses the billions that are likely to be able to be rejected from the planned special fund for the infrastructure.
“Otherwise there is a risk that the funds will be used where they strengthen the competitive position of the DB’s own transport companies.” For control, an independent instance with a proven expertise is needed to ensure that the funds end up where they bring the greatest economic benefit.
