“That’s what fascinates me about teaching: From day one, the students at the new Technical University in Linz can start a project, a real world scenario, in which they learn,” Gerhard Eschelbeck outlined one aspect of the new TU that is currently being founded Upper Austria. The chairman of the concept group described the key points of the new university at the Innovation Day 2022 of the Upper Austrian Chamber of Commerce, Industry Division.
A new target group of students is to be addressed, namely “those who are interested in technology but who may have reservations about technology” because they are not purely interested in technology, says Eschelbeck. Digitization is understood very “broadly”, in an interdisciplinary approach that includes everyday personal life with its problems. Something very special is the common “core” in the first three semesters of the bachelor’s degree, the basis for all subsequent digitization focuses. The focus on a network with business and non-profit organizations is very important. Each student should be accompanied by mentors from business and art. “I do it myself with my own students. That makes a big difference in life,” says Google’s ex-IT security chief, who lives in the United States.
Governor Thomas Stelzer described the TU for digitization and digital transformation as an “important building block” in making Upper Austria a leading science and research location in Europe when he met Education Minister Martin Polaschek in Linz on Tuesday for a working meeting.
The connection point (transfer center) between the university and business is central, said Martin Bergsmann, technology spokesman for the industry division. The internationalization of the TU also needs an international community in Linz and a more secure use of the lingua franca English in the companies, according to Economics Minister Markus Achleitner.
