Aeroexpress trains to the northern terminals of Sheremetyevo Airport B and C will be launched in April-May of this year, three sources in the train and air harbor operator told Izvestia.
A representative of Russian Railways confirmed that the opening of a new railway station at the airport and the launch of trains to the northern terminal complex (STK) are scheduled for this spring.
The train will, as usual, follow from Odintsovo via Moscow to the old terminal in the southern terminal complex (UTK). Then it will drive back a little, go around the airfield on the right and drive up to terminal B. A source in Aeroexpress told Izvestia that trains will run at the same interval of 30 minutes, the frequency of movement will remain at the current level. Today, 34 pairs of trains go to the airport every day.
Aeroexpress noted that “we are ready to launch traffic as soon as construction is completed and all permits for organizing passenger transportation have been received.” The company clarified that the current train stop in the southern part of the airport will become an intermediate one, and added that they are still waiting for the final version of the scheme and timetable from Russian Railways.
Today, it is possible to get to terminals B and C of the airport, from where Aeroflot and Rossiya operate flights, only by car or by an underground shuttle under the airfield, which runs between the southern and northern complexes. It consists of four wagons, accommodating up to 27 people, and is designed mainly for the transport of transfer passengers. But today all passengers use shuttles without exception. The press service of Sheremetyevo told Izvestia that even after the launch of trains in STK, underground shuttles will continue to run in the current mode. Today their average load is 35%.
Rail transport to Russia’s largest airport will be in demand as passenger traffic recovers after the pandemic, says Mikhail Blinkin, director of the Institute for Transport Economics at the National Research University Higher School of Economics. So far, Sheremetyevo is 38% behind pre-Covid indicators – last year’s report showed that the airport served 30.9 million people, compared to almost 50 million in 2019.
