High customs barriers make business with the United States difficult. The latest figures on German foreign trade confirm this. After all, the decline is still comparatively manageable.
The US tariffs on iron, steel and aluminum brake German export. From January to April, the German deliveries of iron and steel as well as iron and steel goods to the United States decreased by 0.4 percent to 1.3 billion euros in the previous year. According to calculations by the Federal Statistical Office, aluminum exports to the USA decreased by 1.8 percent to 218 million euros.
Since March 12, 2025, the USA has been raising additional duties of 25 percent for the import of iron, steel, aluminum and were additional duties. These tariffs have been 50 percent since June 4, 2025.
A decline in the US business is still comparatively moderate
However, the declines in iron and steel were significantly lower than the minus of the entire German iron and stahlexports, such as the Wiesbaden statisticians. Overall, the Federal Office has a decline of 4.2 percent to 20.7 billion euros in the first four months of the current year. With a share of over six percent, the United States was 6th in the most important customer states for iron and steel from German production.
At aluminum, the United States ranks 10th of Germany for Germany. In total, German manufacturers exported more aluminum in the first four months and were more than a year earlier: 6.4 billion euros meant an increase of eight percent at the same period last year.
