Sturm and hail: 1.3 billion storm damage to cars

Some cars have only one dent, others are just a scrap heap: a storm can cause serious damage as a car accident.

In the past year, storms caused a total cost of around 1.3 billion euros. A total of 340,000 cars in Germany were damaged, as the entire Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV) announced. The damage ranged from small dents and scratches to the destruction by falling trees or floods.

The actual number of cars made by storm and hail was even higher, because the companies pay storm damage only for comprehensive vehicles. Only motor vehicle liability is required by law. This only covers damage that drivers cause property on different people.

Southern Germany hit the hardest

The storm damage to the comprehensive cars were very unevenly distributed: “Beaders” was at a large distance from Baden-Württemberg. In the southwest alone, storms damaged 133,500 vehicles, an above -average proportion of more than a third. The costs amounted to 530 million euros. In second place followed Bavaria with 65,000 non -weather damage – although this was most expensive in the German comparison of an average of 4,300 euros.

According to the association, in 2024 there was an average year in this regard. However, the storm damage increases in a long -term comparison. “We have seen in recent years that individual storm cells and hailsters become more violent,” said GDV general manager Jörg Asmussen.
