Arcelormittal does not want to take any money in Germany in Germany for the time being to cook more climate -friendly steel. And what about the German industry leader Thyssenkrupp?
Germany’s largest steel producer Thyssenkrupp Steel wants to continue to build a facility for more climate -friendly steel production in Duisburg. “We are stated by our plan to complete the first direct reduction system in Duisburg,” said a company spokesman at the request of the German Press Agency dpa. At the same time, he pointed out that the project “at the border of economy” was moved.
Construction has already started. The company is expected to receive a total of around two billion euros in funding from the federal government and the state of North Rhine -Westphalia.
On Thursday, the Arcelormittal steel company announced that it initially put its green steel plans on hold in Germany: the group does not want to continue to pursue its plans for decarbonizing the flat steel works in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt. The company said that the investments could not continue the investments due to the market situation and the lack of economy of a CO2-reduced steel production. For the projects planned by ArcelorMittal, the state had already approved 1.3 billion euros in funding.
Thyssenkrupp: “At the limit of economy”
Thyssenkrupp Steel also referred to the economic situation in his statement: “We are moving with this project at the border of economy,” said the spokesman. “Above all, there is currently no prospect of sufficiently affordable hydrogen and long -term competitive energy prices.”
The system could be operated with natural gas. “But the purpose is to avoid as much CO2 as possible and make the steel green.” For this reason, too, it is important that the federal government determines the major topics with a growth -oriented industrial policy.
Appendix in Duisburg should replace two blast furnaces
The system for more climate -friendly steel production is to replace two blast furnaces by 2030. It should first be operated with natural gas, later with hydrogen. If the system were only operated with hydrogen, around 143,000 tons of it would be necessary.
According to previous information, the system is expected to cost around three billion euros. The head of the plant manufacturer SMS Group, Jochen Burg, said at the end of March in an interview with the “Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung” that the direct reduction system should be raised step by step from the end of 2027.
