Klingbeil wants to fight for jobs with “green steel”
The green conversion of two steelworks has stalled. A decision by ArcelorMittal creates uncertainty. SPD boss Klingbeil makes a suggestion.
The SPD chairman Lars Klingbeil is committed to the preservation of the jobs for the “green” conversion of the steel industry in Germany. “We are fighting for every industrial workplace in Germany,” said the Federal Minister of Finance at the SPD Brandenburg State Party Conference in Cottbus. “Let us find solutions now.” To do this, he called on Federal Minister of Economics Katherina Reiche (CDU) to participate.
ArcelorMittal Europe had announced on Thursday that plans would be given up to switch the flat steel works in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt to climate -neutral production without coal burning. The investments could not be continued due to the market situation and the lack of economy of a CO2-reduced steel production. The group also does not use government funding.
SPD boss wants perspective for “green steel”
“It has to be about showing a perspective for” green steel “in Germany,” said Klingbeil of the German Press Agency. “We want Germany to be strong industrial location. This includes for the future viability of the” green steel “.” Now, for example, the question arises how long funding programs were going, how they are interpreted and whether there are transitional options. The “green steel” is the conversion into more climate -friendly production.
On the edge of the SPD state party conference, Klingbeil and Brandenburg’s Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke spoke to the Chairman of the works council of ArcelorMittal in Eisenhüttenstadt, Dirk Vogeler. The SPD leader said under reference to the works council: “It is not threatening for Eisenhüttenstadt, it is more critical in Bremen. But we can’t sit back now.” He emphasized: “I want us to fight there.”
SPD boss suggests the summit
Klingbeil called – straightened to rich – to a kind of steel summit. “I approached the Minister of Economic Affairs now with the request to get all the actors to a table first,” he said. “I would also like to support this as finance minister.” The Federal Ministry of Economics had regretted the decision of ArcelorMittal and pointed out that no state funds had yet flowed.
