The YouTube star Mikayla Raines is dead. The founder of the animal rescue organization “Save a Fox” died at the age of only 29. Her husband Ethan confirmed the tragic message he published on Monday on her YouTube channel. Raines therefore committed suicide.
“Mikayla was really the most amazing and inspiring person I have ever known,” said Ethan in a broken voice and in tears. “Not having them here makes everything appear empty.” In addition to her husband, the young woman also leaves the daughter Freya together, who was regularly seen in Raines’ social media posts.
A mission that started at the age of 20
Mikayla Raines founded her organization “Save a Fox” in 2017 when she was just 20 years old. Their goal was to save foxes from fur farms and give them a permanent home. What started as a small project in Minnesota developed into one of the most famous animal rescue organizations on the Internet. Through her heart -warming videos, in which she documented the life of the saved foxes, she won a huge fan base. Almost 2.5 million people followed her on YouTube alone, more than 500,000 on Instagram.
“From an early age, she was determined to use every guard hour of her life to help animals,” recalled Ethan Raines. In his statement, he explained that Raines was in the autism spectrum, which often made life difficult for her, but at the same time made her extraordinary dedication possible. “It allowed her to concentrate hyperfocused on one thing, and that was obviously the animals,” he said.
According to her husband, Mikayla Raines also suffered from various mental stress, including depression and a borderline personality disorder. A “online bullying campaign” was particularly painful for them, which was directed against them and their organization. These attacks came not only from strangers, but also people close to them. She felt like the whole world turned against her.
Husband wants to let the legacy live on
Despite his own grief, Ethan Raines is determined to continue his wife’s life’s work. “I won’t let Mikayla’s light go out,” he promised in the video. “I will not allow the negativity to win and I will not allow your mission to collapse.”
