In the middle of summer Nuremberg chose his Christ child
While many people sweat in the heat, the city of Nuremberg already thinks at Christmas. The Christ child was elected earlier than usual in 2025. Girls can still apply by the end of June.
Months before the start of Advent, Nuremberg chooses a new Christ child. By the end of June, 16 to 19-year-old girls from Nuremberg can apply for the Christmas office. The election is planned for July 24th – five months before Christmas Eve – and thus much earlier than in previous years. Otherwise the application phase always started in September.
The reason for the earlier appointment is that the Christ child has a little more time after the election to prepare for his appearances, said the city’s Christ child supervisor, Susanne Randel.
The tailoring of the State Theater then also had more time to make the angelic costume.
A dress decorated with stars, curly wig, golden crown and wing – in this robe the Christ child opens the world -famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt every year from the gallery of the Frauenkirche high above the minds of thousands.
If you want to become a Christmas child, you should be free of dizziness and weatherproof, as well as a warm and resilient. Because during Advent, more than 100 appointments are on the program in schools, kindergartens or old people’s homes.
Even if you don’t think about gingerbread, glossy lights and mulled wine in view of the heat, the early application phase has not reduced interest in the office, as Randel explained. “Some applications have already been received.”
On June 30th at midnight is the application deadline. After that, the citizens can vote for their favorite from a pre -selection of twelve applicants on the Internet or by postcard. Six of them get one round. In the end, a jury decides.
The Nuremberg Christkind has been around since 1948. In the past, actresses slipped into the role, since 1969 it has been girls from Nuremberg. The term of office is always two years.
The Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt 2025 is from November 28th to December 24th.
