It has been 40 years since Boris Becker triumphed in Wimbledon. Then he made headlines with his private life. High time for a review.
July 7, 1985 was a historic day. Not only for Boris Becker himself, but for all of sports Germany. Because the victory of the then 17-year-old Becker was supposed to trigger a tennis hype across the country-and make the Leimener become a superstar. Overall, he won the venerable tennis tournament three times. After his career, Becker often dominated the headlines with his private life, especially with his relationships. In January, his ex-wife Lilly Becker chatted out of the sewing box in the RTL jungle camp.
The relationship between the two failed a few years earlier and long before Becker was convicted by a London court. During the process, another woman was on Becker’s side. And she was the one who organized his affairs while sitting in prison: Lilian de Carvalho Monteiro, Becker’s then girlfriend and today’s wife, spoke to friends and relatives, while her partner was in British at the time. She coordinated visits and stayed in contact with Becker. In his first interview after the prison sentence, the former tennis player was grateful accordingly – and raved about his wife in the highest tones.
She was the “love of my life”, Becker said then moderator Steven Gätjen. He was particularly impressed that she continued to stand by him after the conviction. “My dear, you don’t have to wait for me. I don’t know how long I have to go to prison,” Becker recalled her last conversation before taking an in prison. “She looked at me: ‘Boris, we are a team. You are my partner’,” he revealed her answer.
In an interview with the star the tennis star emphasizes how important his partner is to him. “For me this may be the first partnership at eye level. Nobody is more important than the other. I need Lilian and I hope that she also needs me,” he says. Before Becker met the love of his life, he made headlines with his failed relationships.
