Sorkin will direct social network part II for Sony Pictures. Although it is called second part, it is not a direct sequel, but a continuation of the original film that explored the origins of what would become the world’s largest social media platform, reports the Deadline portal.
The new film project is in development with Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin and Stuart Besser as producers.
What will the new social network film deal with
Sorkin’s original script for the new film explores the story behind The Facebook Files of Jeff Horowitzof the Wall Street Journal, an explosive series of articles published in October 2021 that presented the internal functioning of the world’s largest social network and the multiple damage caused by it.
Released in 2010 by Sony Pictures and based on Accidental millionaires of Ben MezrichSocial network was a great success of public and criticism, raising 226 million dollars at the world box office. Nominated for eight Oscar awards, including the best film, the film won three, including Sorkin’s best script.
Since its launch, Sorkin has repeatedly expressed its interest in continuing, but did not find the appropriate approach. After the events of January 6, 2020, when the United States Capitol was attacked, Sorkin found a new inspiration by stating in an interview last year that believed that Facebook had had something to do.
The sources emphasize that the new film is not a film of “January 6” and will focus not only on the 2020 elections, but also on the effect of Facebook on adolescents, preteen, violence and countries outside the United States.
Although the original film was directed by David FincherSorkin will assume the direction of this film, after having perfected its skills from the premiere of the original social network. Among his last works as director are included Molly’s Game, Chicago’s 7 trial and Being The Ricardos.
A production date has not been set, but according to the aforementioned medium, after several closed agreements, Sorkin will now focus on finding its cast. You can expect all city agents Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield.
Speaking of Eisenberg, who received an Oscar nomination for playing the Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerbergthe relevance that will have in this story is unknown and if Sorkin has contacted him to repeat the role. While it is logical that most other characters do not return to this movie, it is difficult to imagine another movie about Facebook without Zuckerberg’s participation.
