Charlize Theron raves about life as a single mother and calls it the best decision in her life.
While other celebrities celebrate their relationships, Charlize Theron goes a completely different way. The 49-year-old Oscar winner raves about her life as a single mother and clearly says: she doesn’t need a man at her side to be happy.
In Alex Cooper, the actress spoke openly about her deliberately chosen single existence with her two adopted daughters Jackson (12) and August (9). “That was one of the healthiest decisions I’ve ever made,” explains Theron.
Social prejudices against single-mothers
The actress knows the prejudices with which single women are confronted. “For women it always says: ‘Something has to be wrong with her. She can’t hold a man,'” she describes the social clichés. “It is never part of the discussion: ‘Wow, she really lives as she wants.'”
Theron radically questions this way of thinking. She looks at people who make such comments and thinks: “Do you know how damn great it is to live exactly as I want to live? She also confidently countered the objection that her lifestyle without a father is unfair to her children: “I can only tell you that this is the best way I know to be a mother for her.”
What Theron appreciates the most about her life as a single mother puts her to the point: “I love that I don’t have to share her with someone.” She becomes even more direct when it comes to the practical aspects: “I love that I don’t have to deny every damned shit with a guy. I don’t have to do co-parenting. I broke through the circulation.”
Adoption as a conscious decision
Jackson’s adoption began in 2012, followed by August in 2012. Already in 2018 she explained that adoption was never her second choice. “It was definitely not a second option for me. It was always my first.”
This decision is rooted in her childhood in South Africa, where it was confronted with orphanage and children early on. “Even when I was in relationships, I was always honest with my partners that adoption was the way my family would look like one day.”
