Funeral service for Diogo Jota: His widow Rod came in white

Two days after the fatal car accident of the Portuguese football player Diogo Jota (1996-2025) and his brother André Silva (2000-2025), numerous relatives, companions and teammates gathered in the home town of Gondomar to say goodbye. Friends and members of the accident brothers carried the two light wooden coffins through the town to the church. The teammates of FC Liverpool also came to the funeral service in Diogo Jota’s hometown. Captain Virgil van Dijk wore a red flower arrangement in the form of a jerseys with Jota’s rear number 20. National team colleague Ruben Neves had flown directly from the United States Club World Cup.

Only family and friends were allowed to enter the church, with a livestream the service under the direction of the bishop was transferred from Porto outside. The Portuguese international and Liverpool striker died in the early morning hours of July 3 with his younger brother in a serious car accident in the Spanish province of Zamora.

According to media reports, the Guardia Civil stated that a tire burst at Jotas Lamborghini Aventador when another car was overtaking, then the car came off the street and caught fire.

Diogo Jota had signed his contract with Liverpool in 2022, which would have taken two years. As Portuguese media reported, the association will pay the remaining two annual salaries to his wife in view of the tragedy, which means 14 million euros.
