Carlo Ancelotti was sentenced to one year in prison for tax evasion, but does not have to go to prison.
A year in prison – this punishment has imposed a Spanish court against Carlo Ancelotti (66). The current national coach of Brazil and former coach of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid was convicted of tax evasion. The good news for the 66-year-old: he doesn’t really have to go behind grids.
According to the Spanish law, accused without a criminal record for non -violent crimes with a punishment under the age of two rarely actually have to be prison. Instead, Ancelotti gets away with a fine of around 386,000 euros.
Millions of tax debts from real time
The allegations refer to Ancelotti’s first term at Real Madrid between 2013 and 2015. During this time, the Italian coach is said to have not paid for a million euros in taxes on his salary.
Ancelotti had defended himself in court earlier this year. “I never thought of committing fraud,” he said at the time in his statement. The coach said Real Madrid offered him a net content of six million euros, and he left the payment of the taxes to his financial advisors.
“Was completely normal back then”
“I thought that was completely normal because at the time all players and the previous coach had done the same thing,” Ancelotti justified in court. After all, the trainer was cooperative: Ancelotti paid back his tax debt completely in December 2021.
From the royal club to Brazil’s Seleção
Ancelotti ended his second term at Real Madrid at the end of last season and then took over the post as a Brazilian national coach. The experienced coach, who already trained clubs such as Chelsea and Bayern Munich in his career, can probably tackle his new task despite conviction.
This is part of a series of tax problems of prominent footballers and coaches in Spain. The country has been hard against tax evasion in sports in recent years. Often with prominent cases that made headlines – such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
