Surprise in the Danish royal family: Queen Margrethe II slips back into her old role as a monarch for a week.

A surprising change in time in the Danish Königshaus: Queen Margrethe II (85) apparently jumps into a regent at short notice. The palace has been said since yesterday’s 9th: “Your majesty Queen Margrethe is head of state”. A surprising turn :, should actually take over the position of Crown Prince Christian (19).

And indeed: On Sunday, July 6th, the heir to the throne is still on the calendar as the head of the state. The royal house had announced that Christian, King Frederik X. (57), would step in as a regent during his father’s absence. According to the royal calendar, he was supposed to take on all the tasks of the monarch between July 6th and 13th. But only a few days later this decision was revised.

Christian apparently had to cancel at short notice

The updated calendar has been showing since Wednesday morning: not Crown Prince Christian, but the former monarch, Queen Margrethe, is doing the office – and expected until Tuesday, July 15th. King Frederik is expected back in Denmark after his trip abroad, where he was spotted at the grandstand at the tennis tournament in Wimbledon.

The reasons for the sudden change have not yet been officially communicated. “Billed Bladet” suspects that Christian was unable to fill the role as a rain as planned due to personal obligations – possibly in connection with his upcoming study start or private appointments.

In Denmark, the reign can be transferred to certain members of the royal family in the event of absence or prevention of the monarch. In addition to Crown Prince Christian, who, as the heirs to the throne, plays the role of the regent with particular importance, and Queen Margrethe, who has the same powers as a former monarch, also belong to Queen Mary, Prince Joachim and Princess Benedicts. However, they only work as regents, while the heir to the throne plays a special constitutional role.

In January 2024, Queen Margrethe had dismissed on the throne after 52 years and handed over the scepter to son Frederik.
