Now in the cinema: “Superman” David Corenswet felt “like an astronaut”

The new “Superman” actor David Corenswet compared his role to that of an astronaut in front of a moon mission. When director James Gunn informed him that he would embody the legendary superhero, he initially felt relief, then “a moment of peace,” said Corenswet of the German Press Agency in London.

“Hopefully I end up on the moon”

“And finally I felt something that also feels an astronaut in my idea when he is told that he is flying to the moon,” said the 32-year-old. “I trained for it, I wanted it, and now the whole work is ahead of me. Hopefully I end up on the moon in the end.”

The film, which has just started in German cinemas, marks the beginning of a new film universe based on the DC Comics. In the future, Corenswet will probably also be seen in many other productions as Superman and his alter ego Clark Kent.

The US actor said that he did not celebrate the promise for the coveted role. “It was actually a very simple moment,” said Corenswet. “I am lucky enough to have a few people in my life who were very happy and celebrated me enthusiastically. But I myself felt more of a solemn and grateful responsibility.”

Older “Superman” films as preparation for the casting

After stars like Christopher Reeve or Henry Cavill, Corenswet is already the eleventh “Superman” actor. Before he went to the casting, he watched the first film from several predecessors. “It was an entertaining afternoon job to immerse yourself a little in the Superman film world,” he said.

This was not necessary for the preparation for his role. “As soon as you go to work, you can find everything in James Gunn’s script – and then also in the great designs, drawings and visualizations of the artists who design the costumes and build the scenes,” he emphasized. “My focus quickly shifted to the question: What is James trying to tell here, and how do I fit in there?”
