Mónica Fierro: When the book becomes the work of art

In “the wind does not take them …”, her most recent show, the artist has faced a huge flow of old pages, which transforms new objects.

In the individual sample of Mónica Fierro “The wind does not take them …”, Ana María Battistzzi He points out in the curatorial text “that the artist has carefully faced a huge flow of book pages that cuts, folds and encola to elaborate modules and compose forms of its contents in the small object born of multiple folds but also in expanded forms that can suggest animal or organic forces.”

Monica Fierro (Córdoba 1963), resides in Buenos Aires since 1980. He began his studies through classical dance, studied at Arts & Crafts in Holland and England between 1992 and 1999. In Argentina, his teachers were Tana Sachs, Cristina Dartiguelongue, Mariana Cvk and Osvaldo Decastelli.

He confesses that “he rescues books from oblivion and his intention is to give them a new life: I transform the material, I trim it, the roll, the specifications. The color is given by the same paper, the typography, the time spots and its different colors and shapes. I keep secrets inside the pieces I make, fragments of cities, of architectures. I propose a new reading, more metaphysical, multidimensional, open, where the story and the logic They transform into an experience of the body. ”

This time his works are no longer so small; We remember their artist books, theatrical scenes called Pop Up, which delight children and adequate and cause astonishment, but also prove their imagination given the almost sculptural quality of that obsessive, laborious and thorough accumulation to expand on the walls of the gallery space ..

It surprises with its versatility, the possibility that we take a nostalgic look on books that contain ideas, concepts, words, something that has now been – and hope is not definitive – replaced by the immediacy of the screens, mixed with advertisements that prevent a sequential and deep reading.

We admire the rescue you make Monica Fierro of the role that has meant in the intellectual development of man, in terms of the tradition of the word and the printed image, a fact that stands out throughout its creativity and that has now taken a greater dimension as appreciated in this sample, which can be considered as a different step and that, we dare to say it, that catapult as a reference in the manipulation of the paper.
