“Falter” satire is permissible

A photomontage in the style of a nativity scene entitled “geilzeit” showed Sebastian Kurz’s partner Susanne Thier with her breasts bare. The Press Council has now declared the assembly to be permissible in terms of media ethics. The publication was “a pastiche of the fact that family reasons (and not incriminating chat messages) were decisive for the withdrawal from politics”.

It was necessary to examine whether Thier could be included in the political discourse. Although Thier herself did not hold any political office, she was repeatedly present in the media during Kurz’s political activities. “Consequently, Thier took part in public life and the relationship with Kurz was used for the politician’s political narrative,” Senate 1 of the Press Council noted.

“Whether the satire can be classified as successful and whether it made sense to put the partner of the political actor in the center of the picture composition are questions of taste for which the Senate of the Press Council is not responsible,” was finally stated.
