Woe to him who laughs in the land of tears

Woe to him who laughs. That’s the top priority in Jammerland. You can’t, you shouldn’t, you shouldn’t smile, giggle, smile here. That’s where “Miss Sunshine” happens to end up. She decides to put an end to the misery.

How, tells Alexander Kratzel’s entertaining, 40-minute stage adaptation of the book of the same name by Roger Hargreaves, which Nora Dirisamer staged with energetic verve for everyone aged three and over in Linz’s “Theater des Kinds”. Simone Neumayr lives up to her name as the radiant “Miss Sunshine”. Resolutely she dares the contradiction as a living joie de vivre. You can’t, shouldn’t, shouldn’t?! Oh well! It goes without saying that sooner or later she puts a smile on everyone’s face: the earthworm, the strict guard and even the biggest whiner: the king. He’s crouching in his crate throne with a cuddly pillow. And whines. David Baldessari duly despondently masters this pathetic trinity. The foldable, quickly changing stage design by Natascha Wöss gives a gaudy colour: to the catchy music by Andy Baum, Jammerland becomes – you can guess it. (cash)
