Navigation to the penguin colony
About 90 kilometers from Ushuaia is Martillo Island, or better known as “the penguin colony”, the only colony of penguins in Tierra del Fuego.
Between October and April it is possible to see two species of penguins that come to spend their reproductive period on this island in the channel: the Magellanic penguin and the Gentoo penguin in smaller numbers. There are different excursions that take you to know this incredible place.
Some providers start the tour from the commercial dock, pass through some islands until they reach the penguin colony.
Others include the transfer to Puerto Almanza and from there the navigation begins; This tour, depending on the company you hire, can be done by sailboat or motor boat.
The last option includes the transfer to Estancia Harberton, from where the navigation departs, and a walk through the penguin colony.

Sailing and walking through the Bridges Islands
In this navigation you will visit the emblematic points of the Beagle Channel: the island of Los Pajaros, the island of Los Lobos and the Les Eclaireurs lighthouse. The Canal is the habitat of numerous species of birds that accompany you during the tour and make up an unforgettable landscape.
This tour allows you to disembark on Bridges Island and walk along an interpretive trail. There you will be able to appreciate the characteristic flora and fauna and archaeological remains of the Yámana canoe town.
There are two ways to carry out this navigation depending on the provider you hire: in large catamarans or in smaller boats. The route is the same, what changes is the experience inside the boat, the number of people it admits, the more personalized treatment and the distance from the islands.
In summer, the possibility of sailing with a night return is offered, which allows you to see the city illuminated. Providers that offer this possibility generally include snacks and tasting of craft beers.
The views from the Beagle Channel are unmissable; Sailing between the islands full of history and natural beauty is an experience that has no comparison.

I discovered the trans-Andean trails
Undoubtedly, Ushuaia is a spectacular place for hiking. Short or long, with different levels of difficulty, near or far from the city. Wherever you go, the landscape surprises you: glaciers, lagoons, streams, peat bogs and lenga forests make up a unique setting.
Trekking is a highly recommended activity. In addition to the incredible landscapes that you cross, you will be able to connect with nature and breathe fresh air while you share the walk with friends or family, even if you are traveling alone, walking in the mountains is ideal to reconnect with yourself.
Some of the treks that you cannot miss
This trek is of incomparable beauty. Medium difficulty trail that crosses the lenga forest, a peat bog and then ascends to reach the meltwater lagoon. Approximately 5 hours round trip. Just 18 kilometers from the city, along Route 3. For those who want to enjoy nature without venturing out on long walks.
This lagoon is located almost in front of the Esmeralda lagoon, separated by the valley of Tierra Mayor. It is also of medium difficulty, although it is only 3 km, a large part of its route is on steep slopes. This lagoon is located above the forest line and offers wonderful views of the valley. The trek lasts approximately 3 hours, round trip.
It is a walk close to the city and of low difficulty. It starts from the Escarpados beacon, at the end of the Playa Larga Reserve, 4 km from the city. This path borders the Beagle Channel and offers landscapes that take your breath away, as well as being a quiet walk through the coastal forest. It presents very little unevenness and they are covered in approximately 4 hours between round trip.
Following a path of high difficulty, you can reach the viewpoint of the emblematic Martial Glacier. Much of the walk is done above the forest line, that is, an open and rocky landscape. From there the views of the Beagle Channel, the city and the mountains are incredible. This trek requires approximately 4 hours, round trip.
There are other routes as well and the degrees of difficulty are very diverse. However, even the simplest ones have an indescribable charm.
The mountains that you will find in this area are not too high, but due to the climatic conditions and the relief, the treks entail a certain degree of difficulty. That is why we recommend going with specialized guides who have the necessary equipment and knowledge to make a pleasant and safe walk.
Put on your trekking boots and go out to discover the corners and secrets of the Fuegian forest. We always recommend going in the company of a specialized guide.

Maritime Museum and former prison of Ushuaia
In the pavilions of the former prison of Ushuaia are the Maritime Museum, the Antarctic Museum and the Museum of Marine Art. This place contains the history of famous shipwrecks and native canoeists, expeditions to Antarctica and legends about the inmates of the Ushuaia Prison.
Inside the museum there is an art gallery with traveling exhibitions, a book and souvenir shop, and a coffee shop in the central hall that also serves as an event space. If you go out towards one of the internal courtyards, between the pavilions, you will find the old bakery where numerous films have been shown and plays developed.
Walking through these corridors is to breathe the history of what was once an inhospitable corner, visited by a few adventurers or by those who were sent to pay their sentences at the End of the World.
The former prison is part of the origins and development of the Fuegian community. Built by the prisoners themselves, it is a living piece of the path that has traveled the island of Tierra del Fuego, and in particular, the city of Ushuaia.
The museum offers various types of guided tours at set times. Today, only one of them is available.
-The conventional visit that runs through the museum narrating a part of history. On this tour you will be able to see the exact replica of the lighthouse at the End of the World that is located on the Isla de los Estados.
