Even if the younger son of King Charles III. Circle of Royals is no longer too narrower, he wants to continue to follow his mother’s footsteps. He takes it very literally.
Prince Harry (40) emerge his mother – at least when it comes to courage and commitment to landmines. The younger son of the British King Charles III. (76) thus enters the footsteps of Princess Diana.
Like his mother once, Harry marched through a mine field in Angola in South African. The only protection when walking through a narrow path in the middle of red warning signs with a skull symbol was a blue vest.
Pictures went around the world back then
With a very similar campaign, the former Princess of Wales had caused a sensation months before her accident death in 1997. The pictures from Angola went around the world and stimulated a global debate about the dangers of landmines.
Just like Diana at the time, Harry wants to draw attention to the work of the Halo Trust. The international organization clears mine fields all over the world and helps people avoid the dangerous remains of armed conflicts.
“Children should never have to live in fear when they play outside or go to school,” said Harry, who took part in a lesson for children about mines and other explosive bodies in the remote village of Cuito Canavale in southeast Angolas.
Civil war raged almost three decades
According to the organization, at least 60,000 people have been killed or injured by land mines in Angola since 2008 alone. Over 120,000 mines and 100,000 bombs have already been defused. Nevertheless, there are still 1,000 mine fields left.
In Angola, an almost three decades of bloody conflict raged in 1975. The civil war, which continued until 2002, demanded numerous victims and left a country with destroyed infrastructure and dangerous legacies.
