The US broadcaster CBS leaves the shipment of late night moderator Stephen Colbert. For financial reasons, it is said – but critics suspect political causes. US President Trump is happy.
US President Donald Trump celebrated the announced dismissal of the late night show by satirist Stephen Colbert. “I totally love that Colbert has been fired,” Trump wrote on his online language tube Truth Social. “His talent was even smaller than his ratings,” he said of the moderator, who is known for his snappy humor and repeatedly criticizes the US President.
Previously, the US broadcaster CBS had announced that “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” would end in May 2026. Since Colbert is irreplaceable, the program will then be stopped. The moderator took over the “Late Show”, which started in 1993, a decade ago by David Letterman.
It was a “purely financial decision” given the hard competition in the late night TV, it said by CBS. They are not related to the number of spectators, content or processes in the company. There are reasons that the broadcaster has to emphasize this: Colbert often moves over Donald Trump in his show-and the CBS mother group Paramount has been targeted in recent months.
Trump made allegations against the makers of the CBS show “60 Minutes”. Last year you would have cut a long interview with Kamala Harris, his rival in the race around the White House, so that this had concealed a weak answer. “60 Minutes” contested this and also published a transcript to refute the allegations. Trump went to court. And although US media law experts saw the company in a strong position, Paramount agreed to a $ 16 million comparison.
“Big, fat bribes”
Paramount needs the consent of the US government for a change of ownership that had been negotiated for a long time. Colbert had described the comparison with Trump in his show this week as “a big fat bribe payment”.
The moderator Jimmy Kimmel, who has moderated the “Late Night Show” at the ABC broadcaster since 2003, expressed his support and insulted his broadcaster CBS. “I love you Stephen.”
Trump also announced against Kimmel, who also often criticizes the US President in his show. “I hear that Kimmel is the next thing. He has even less talent than Colbert!”
