Ex-English star Paul Gascoigne was taken to the hospital at home after a collapse. The 58-year-old is stable.

Paul Gascoigne (58) fights for his health again. The former England star was found unconscious on Friday evening in his home in Poole, Dorset, and brought to the hospital immediately. As the British tabloid newspaper reports, the football legend is now in a stable constitution.

Steve Foster (67), a former Brighton defender, who works as a Gascoignes driver and personal assistant, said the star passed out in his bedroom. Foster immediately brought Gascoigne to a nearby hospital by car, where the 58-year-old was initially brought to the intensive care unit.

From the intensive care unit to the acute station

In the meantime, Gascoigne has been moved from the intensive care unit to an acute station, which is considered a positive sign. “Paul is in the hospital what the best possible place is for him,” Foster told the newspaper. The former Tottenham and Newcastle player is expected to remain in the hospital for several days for treatment.

Foster also conveyed a message from Gascoigne himself: “Paul would like to thank everyone for the support that he has received from so many old friends so far who wish him all the best and want to see him in the best form again.”

Decades of fight against alcohol and psychological problems

Gascigne, who played a total of 57 times for England and is one of the most talented footballers in his generation, has been fighting publicly against his alcohol addiction and psychological problems for decades. These started during his active career and worsened after his resignation from professional football in 2004.

In 2020, Gascoigne spoke that he was able to turn his life after so-called anti-alcohol pellets had been sewn into the stomach that would make him sick if he continued to drink. It was only in March of this year that he spoke openly about his situation in a podcast and described himself as a “sad drinker” who lives in a guest room in the house of his agent Katie Davies in the county of Dorset.
