Bill Cosby mourns his series son, actor Malcolm-Jamal Warner. His sudden death reminds him of his own son.
After the death of “Bill Cosby Show” star Malcolm-Jamal Warner (1970-2025), Bill Cosby (88) reacted. His spokesman said that the tragic incident was “devastating” and Cosby reminded of his own late son, who was shot in 1997.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner, who played Cosby’s series son Theo Huxtable, drowned on July 20 off the coast of Costa Rica, as the “ABC News” police confirmed. He was only 54 years old.
Malcolm-Jamal Warner used to play with Cosby’s son
“Malcolm did what he loved when he died – he was with his family,” said Cosby’s spokesman Andrew Wyatt. He further explained that his death “reminded of the same call he received when his son died”. Ennis William Cosby, the only son of the actor, was shot in 1997 at the age of 27 in an attempted robbery on a motorway entrance in Los Angeles when he tried to change a flat tire.
Warner drowned meanwhile swimming. According to Judicial Investigation Agency (OIJ), “the victim apparently reached the sea” and was carried away by a current. “The man was saved by passers -by and brought ashore, where he was treated by the Costarican Red Cross.” However, he died at the scene of the accident.
Spokesman Andrew Wyatt also recalled that the deceased once played with Cosby’s son and called the events of July 20 “devastating”. Malcolm-Jamal Warner immediately reported to Cosby after Ennis William’s death and comforted him.
Memories of the last conversation
In an interview with CBS News, Bill Cosby paid tribute to the late Warner and remembered the shooting together: “He was never afraid to go to his room and learn. He knew his text and felt quite comfortable despite the growth pain of a teenager.” The last time the two had spoken to each other “three months ago”. It was about Warner’s “Art in Motion” concert with the Minnesota Orchestra.
Serious allegations against Bill Cosby
Malcolm-Jamal Warner initially stood in front of the camera for a few smaller series roles before being famous with the “Bill Cosby Show” in the 1980s and 1990s. At that time he played Theodore or Theo, one of the children of the Huxtable family. The parents were embodied by Bill Cosby (88) and Phylicia Rashad (77).
Bill Cosby was sentenced to a prison sentence of three to ten years in 2018 for drug abuse and sexual assault on another woman. The Supreme Court of Pennsylvania raised its conviction for sexual assault in 2021 and enabled Cosby’s release. However, five other women sued Cosby for sexual assault. Cosby’s defense rejects all the allegations made against him.
“Regardless of what some people think about the show today, I am still proud of the inheritance and to have been part of such an iconic show who had such a profound influence – primarily – on black culture, but also on American culture,” said Warner in a conversation with “People” in February 2023.
