The Minister of Culture invited the top major media groups to the Chancellery for Wednesday. In his view, there is a lot to talk about.
Minister of Culture Wolfram Weimer urges the big US streaming providers such as Netflix, Amazon Prime or Disney+ to film investments in Germany. Before a meeting on Wednesday, he put an obligation or commitment in the room. “Anyone who successfully does business in Germany, benefits from the German market and tax-financed funding should also invest more in German film productions,” said Weimer of the German Press Agency.
Weimer has invited the tops of several media groups to the Chancellery. “I would also like to talk to the corporations about voluntary self -commitments,” said the representative for culture and media. “The streamer summit in the Chancellery is also used on Wednesday.”
“Great production locations”
He added: “We have great production sites, talented screenwriters and actresses, plus extensive film funding from the federal and state governments. There are many good reasons to become more active in this country.”
The Minister of Culture recalled that the coalition agreement also provides for an investment obligation in the course of film funding. “There are always ways to get in directly in production facilities – as with the Bavaria film studios,” added Weimer. There is a restructuring at the studios. If the owners continued to open up to private investors, it was good “for film hits made in Germany”.
Most recently, Weimer had expressed concern about the German film industry. The “Rheinische Post” said that in Germany too many films were produced by the audience. “Those who make films should above all think of the audience,” he said. At the same time, he spoke of structural faults by digital platforms and streaming providers.
“We are experiencing a revolutionary process because almost the entire media business, from development to production to evaluation, is faced with massive changes,” he said. “In fact, media monopolies of American origin are created here. And our system is not only under pressure, but is also in existential concerns.”
