Helen Mirren will be 80
Again and again queen

Helen Mirren has been shining in every role for decades. She celebrates her 80th birthday on Saturday.

Whether Rebellin, murderer or queen, Helen Mirren has been playing every role on stage and in the film with flying colors for more than 60 years. For many critics, it is clear: Helen Mirren is the best actress in the world. On July 26, she turns 80.

Again and again the queen

She played dark women like Lady Macbeth, prostitutes, elegant ladies, a brittle policewoman. She was a politician, maid, professional murderer, victim, perpetrator, secret service officer, mystical sorceress, dignified older lady, crazy chicken.

The western series “1923” is currently running on Netflix, in which she embodies an indomitable Rancher-Grahin, which determines the family skills and can reach for the shotgun. She also plays a strong patriarch in the Paramount+series “Mobland”. But this time she is a merciless criminal who is not afraid of anything – not even with murder within her own family. A second season has already been decided.

And again and again she was queen. At the age of 18 she joined the National Youth Theater. Shortly afterwards she plays Cleopatra in Shakespeare’s “Antonius and Cleopatra” at London Old Vic and receives an offer from the Royal Shakespeare Company and first film roles. In 1995 she embodied Queen Charlotte in “King George – a kingdom for more minds” and is recognized as the best actress at the film festival in Cannes and nominated for the Oscar. In 2005 she presented the legendary English monarch in the TV series “Elizabeth I” and received the Emmy Award and Golden Globe.

In 2006, Helen Mirren embodied the British Queen Elizabeth II in “Die Queen” – a performance for which she is awarded the Oscar as the best leading actress. In her acceptance speech at the Oscar Awards, she recognizes the Queen and emphasizes its dignity and steadfastness in times of crisis. In 2019 she embodies “Katharina the Great” in the four -part mini series of the same name.

Not pretty enough for Hollywood?

So far, she has shot over 100 movies and TV productions. In one of her first films (“The Girl of the Coral Riff”, 1969), she appeared naked as a painter. Ten years later, she exposes herself in “Caligula”, which was torn by criticism as a soft porn and later explained about the Helen Mirren: “It was as if you were appearing in a nudist camp every day. It was embarrassing if you loaded clothes in this film.”

Was it a coquetry or just one of her typical sayings when she sounded at the beginning of her career that she wasn’t pretty enough for Hollywood? “I was a blond girl with big tits. I hated this picture. It was so uncomfortable and tasteless for me”.

Later she has her naked in the USA, as if she wanted to provoke the Americans with her biting humor. At 64, she sat in a bathtub for the “New York Magazine”, at 66 she undressed for “Esquire”, only covered with the Union Jack, the British national flag. At 70, the FFK supporter announces-“I’m happiest on a nudist beach with people of all ages! It is so gender-neutral and so liberating!” – Your “official resignation of nude scenes”.

She tells the beauty -obsessed Hollywood that she decided early on “not so pretty” – and says about the interaction of appearance and talent: “You only have to look shit in a film and everyone thinks you think of a brilliant actress. In reality you only look shit.”

Married for almost 30 years

As exceptional as their professional work may be, their private life is so unspectacular. At the beginning of the 1980s, she collided with the British-Irish actor Liam Neeson (73), and had met during the filming of the fantasy film “Excalibur”. In 1986 she fell in love with the American director Taylor Hackford (80), which she married in 1997. It is her first marriage, his third.

Children don’t have Helen Mirren. She says she “has no mother instinct at all. I’m so happy not to have children. But I love children and have family. Taylor has children I care about.” The couple mostly live in the hills above Los Angeles (California) and in London when she plays theater in England.

If she walks through Hollywood via the Walk of Fame with her man of the same age or with friends where she primarily appreciates the ability to “open a bottle of wine”, she may go over the star that was dedicated to her in 2013. At that time she joked disrespectfully: “I will actually finally be next to Colin Firth, I wanted that for a very long time.”
